Spring spreaders for the Model A have been around quite a while, and are pretty easy to find online and order. We felt we could improve on the design a bit, so instead of ordering, we made one.
The standard spreader is typically a bent tube with threaded ends, and a tube crossbar for added strength. The threaded bars have feet attached, as well as a nut for turning the bars in and out to spread or retract the suspension spring. The feet fit into the rolled ends of the spring.
Our design utilized the bent top bar, but added a steel lower bracket for rigidity. We also used acme threads on the threaded bars, for easier use. Thrush bearings were added behind the nuts to add a smoother action on the threaded bars. Finally, we added some removable “wings” to the design. The wings are folded up to trap the spring into place, and also supplies a lift point for the overhead hoist.
We don’t need it often, but sure comes in handy when we do use it.
